Blackwood - Wattle (Acacia melanoxylon)
Acacia melanoxylon is one of our most widely used plants for screens, windbreaks and shade trees. The Blackwood is an attractive, dense, upright tree with pale creamy flowers. Acacia melanoxylon is very long lived (100+ years) and adaptable to a broad range of site conditions.
Acacia melanoxylon is widespread in eastern Australia, occurring from northern Queensland, through tablelands and coastal escarpments of southeast Queensland, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. Acacia melanoxylon is spread throughout a wide range of habitats from cool sites to tropical lowlands and on a wide variety of soil types.
Flowering generally occurs in late Winter-Spring in the north and Spring-Summer in the south. Seed pods become mature Summer through to Autumn with February being the best time for collection.
Acacia melanoxylon produces high-grade commercial timber which is used for furniture, cabinetry and also produces good acoustics in stringed instruments.
This Acacia is a great windbreak plant and performs very well in internal and external windbreak rows. Planted on mass Acacia melanoxylon plantations can provide firewood or commercial timber.
Acacia melanoxylon is frost and snow resistant, very long lived and grows in a great range of locations. These reasons to name a few make it one of our most popular plants and one of our favourites.
